Joseph Cheaney - Flagship Store Jerymn Street London

A new Cheaney flagship store has opened at 21b Jermyn Street London.

It uses a completely new concept and look to existing shops and contains elements from the Northamptonshire factory where all Cheaney footware is made.  It features wooden shoe lasts, rolls of leather and even a scale model of the factory.

Checkland Kindleysides was appointed to create the concept for Joseph Cheaney’s new store on Jermyn Street, London.

The street, whose own history dates back to the 17th century, has a worldwide reputation for high quality British artistry and craftsmanship and is home to some of London’s finest men’s tailors, shirt makers and suppliers of leather goods: the perfect place for Joseph Cheaney’s new store.

Joseph Cheaney and Sons has been making traditional English shoes in Northamptonshire, England since 1886. Each and every pair is entirely handcrafted in the original factory, from the cutting out of the leather through to the stitching and final polishing.

The concept for Joseph Cheaney’s store is a contemporary take on their Northamptonshire factory which emphasises the heritage and craft of English handmade shoes.

The store is divided into two distinct areas; the front area echoes their factory and is designed to emphasise the fact that Cheaney manufacture by hand in England, this features a display which talks about the craft of the shoemaker and includes a 1:100 scale model of the Cheaney factory, whilst the second area is designed to feel like the boardroom area where portraits of the founders are hung.

The concept presents Joseph Cheaney as a progressive brand with traditional values, steeped in heritage.

A big thank you to Kevin Ash for bringing this beautiful store to my attention and allowing his photographs to be included.
